A few years ago, I happened upon a documentary about a fascinating subject I wasn’t aware existed: people that are in love with inanimate objects. Married to the Effiel Tower follows two women. Erika Eiffel is a former Olympic archer who has a relationship with her bow, and as the title suggests, the Effiel tower. Amy Stokes has a passion for a German rollercoaster ride and church banisters.

The Aurora Borealis is awesome, and I can imagine this would be the ultimate way to see it. In Kakslauttanen, Finland, you can stay in the glass igloo village and have a full view of the incredible Northern Lights. ‘The Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen?!’ BYO steamed hams. Read more

I really wish noise musician/sound artist Randy Yau would do more stuff. His performance of the above piece in Beijing back in about 2003 or so really ripped my face off. It was awesome.

I am such a child of the ’90s. I’ve been reminiscing particularly hard over ’90s hip-hop lately, and I stumbled upon this track by Lords of the Underground featuring Marley Marl and De’1. I love how stuff from back then managed to be gritty and raw yet fun at the same time.

A lot of Baltimore-based illustrator/artist Jee-Shaun Wang’s work involves intricate drawings made to look like prints. I love how intricate and lyrical his images are and the way he effortlessly and seemlessly draws together elements of graphic novels, folk art, and mythic Chinese aesthetics. Read more

Found at the foot of the snow-capped Hochschwab mountains, the Green Lake in Austria is a bit of Autobot. In winter, it looks exactly like what it is: a county park. In spring, the park becomes a diving paradise as melted mountaintop snow runneth down the slopes and submerges the park entirely, with water levels reaching to as high as 10 metres. What a place. This young, leftfield, creative photographer works in the world of fashion. Always pushing the limits and client expectations, he famously shot his most expensive production on a webcam simply because he liked the contrast of having something so high-end shot on something so low key. The results are truly beautiful. Read more

I’ll admit, I’m late to the party. Not just any party, but the party of the warped universe of Katsuhito Ishii films. Here’s an unforgettable scene from his 2004 film Taste of Tea featuring the high-fashion moves of a hotshot photographer and a couple of action hero mascots on the Japanese subway.

Firekites, from small town Australia (Newcastle to be exact), are my new musical obsession, and have been since early yesterday when their song Autumn Story randomly burst into my headphones and latched itself deep into my inner ear iPod. I wish they’d been around when I last lived in Sydney; it would have been well worth the two hour drive north to see them play. The whole album (The Bowery) is beautiful, but this song especially rings out with poignancy. I love the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.
This café, cookie shop, ice cream place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn is all about flavor, aroma and family. Their cookies and ice cream are absolutely to-die-for, and the place is so well-designed, painted in vintage colors with old family pictures printed on the walls, that you’ll want to indulge yourself for more than just a few minutes. Try their Whoopies and Lucia cookies. They’re my favourite.
